Yep, my own little love affair with a green plant. Basil is no ordinary plant in my world. It is the essence of summer in a leaf. I can&#8217;t imagine a summer without tomatoes and basil. I put basil on my sandwiches, sprinkle over my morning eggs and even add to my water bottle.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5527\" src=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-21-at-8.36.18-PM-300x198.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-21-at-8.36.18-PM-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-21-at-8.36.18-PM.png 387w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My basil plants (yes, I have many \u2018cause I love \u2018em!) are planted right outside my back door. Just seeing them flourishing as I come and go from the house, makes me smile. Summer wouldn\u2019t be the same without my basil and I know it\u2019s not summer until I can harvest the first few leaves. At this point in the summer, I am cutting huge branches of my basil and adding to all sorts of recipes, as well as freezing it, so I can survive the long cold,\u00a0&#8220;basil-less\u201d winter. Although I can get basil plants from my market in the winter, they aren\u2019t quite as fabulous as summer basil. I use dried basil in the winter too, but like most ingredients, when I can get it, I opt for fresh.<\/p>\n<p>Like so many fresh ingredients, basil is good for you. Basil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/266425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has properties<\/a> that help fight cancer, reduce inflammation, reduce stress, boost the immune system, and protect white blood cells. If you want to keep a basil plant indoors, make sure it has a lot of sunlight.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Plant<\/span> in a pot or raised garden for best results. If you plant in the ground, make sure the soil is not too compact.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Fertilize<\/span> with Fish Emulsion. Not necessary, but serious gardeners will fertilize.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s not too late to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/content\/2018\/04\/26\/grow-your-own-vegetables-8-easy-tips-to-get-you-started\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plant now<\/a>, and<span style=\"color: #008000;\"> enjoy<\/span> until your area has its first frost.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Cut back<\/span> the early branches to encourage the plant to bush out into many branches.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5510\" src=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/flower-of-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/flower-of-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/flower-of.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pinch<\/span> any flowers off to delay onset of \u201cgoing to seed\u201d. When the plant goes to seed, it stops producing. This can happen if conditions change for the plant such as too much heat or the nights getting colder.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Try<\/span> different varieties such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/superbherb.co.nz\/product\/purple-basil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">purple basil<\/a> or a<a href=\"https:\/\/specialtyproduce.com\/produce\/Lemon_Basil_152.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> lemon basil<\/a>. I love adding in the purple for color variation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Harvest:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Don\u2019t be shy about cutting a lot at once.\u00a0 Just make sure to leave at least a third of the plant. Basil grows quickly and does better when you do cut it.<\/li>\n<li>Cut or pinch to a right above a leaf. Don\u2019t leave a stub.<\/li>\n<li>Use the stems too. Depending on the dish, I cut up the stems and add them. Stems are even stronger in flavor than the leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Cut sprigs last longer in a container of water on the counter than in the refrigerator, where they will shrivel and turn black.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5513 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-21-at-2.52.04-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-21-at-2.52.04-PM.png 523w, https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screen-Shot-2019-08-21-at-2.52.04-PM-300x278.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Soak older or dry looking leaves in water to hydrate them before adding to your recipe.<\/li>\n<li>Cut the plant to the ground before the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespruce.com\/first-and-last-frost-date-2539701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> first frost<\/a>. You don&#8217;t want to miss using even a single leaf!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Preserve basil:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Basil cubes:<\/span> Chop basil and place in ice-cube trays. Cover chopped basil with olive oil and freeze. Perfect to add to all sorts of recipes from pasta dishes to winter soups.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pesto:<\/span> Make this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/recipes\/4407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pesto recipe<\/a> and then freeze in ice-cube trays. Lay out on baking sheet and put in oven at lowest temperature for about 2-4 hours until crumbly.
