Monday, July 13 is National French Fry Day and I&#8217;m all in to honor this potassium rich and delicious way to cook potatoes.\u00a0 Before jumping into the world of fries, I feel like it&#8217;s necessary to pay my respects to the foundation of any good french fry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I absolutely\u00a0<\/span><em><b>love<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0potatoes. It\u2019s one of my top favorite foods to make when I\u2019m at away at college or at home. There are infinite ways to cook potatoes, so it can never be boring to make or unsatisfying to eat. One of our nation&#8217;s favorite ways to enjoy potatoes is\u00a0the ever-classic french fry. I\u2019ve never met someone who said, &#8220;I don&#8217;t like fries.&#8221; In fact, one of my best friends at college loves them so much, that it\u2019s her password for multiple websites. But shhh &#8230; don\u2019t tell her I told you that!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately however, due to the fast-food industries, french fries have become\u00a0incredibly unhealthy: loaded with salt and saturated in oils. I haven\u2019t eaten fast-food fries (or fast food in general) in years, because I\u00a0<\/span><em><b>did<\/b>\u00a0<b>not<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0like the sluggish feeling I\u00a0got after eating them. It\u00a0was\u00a0certainly not a pleasant experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should feel refreshed and well nourished after eating any kind of food. Luckily, we aren\u2019t confined to only eating the fries that come from these chain restaurants.\u00a0<em>AND<\/em>, we aren\u2019t restricted to only\u00a0using\u00a0<em>potatoes<\/em>\u00a0for our fries either. We can use other vegetables to make french fries too! Whether we use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/recipes\/5624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carrots<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/recipes\/1590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">turnips<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/recipes\/5623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zucchinis<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/recipes\/1470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plantains<\/a>, or the more popular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/recipes\/3823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sweet potatoes,<\/a>\u00a0they\u2019re all delicious sides to pair with any meal!<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3085 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Screen-Shot-2018-07-05-at-1.51.24-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"487\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Screen-Shot-2018-07-05-at-1.51.24-PM.png 1022w, https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Screen-Shot-2018-07-05-at-1.51.24-PM-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/wp2.dinnertime.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Screen-Shot-2018-07-05-at-1.51.24-PM-768x522.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing as we\u2019re in the hot months of the summer, no one wants to be confined to cooking in the kitchen. But fortunately, these vegetable fries can also be cooked on the grill. So now you have the ability to be outside and enjoy a warm summer evening.\u00a0If you want to tap into your professional grilling skills, check out\u00a0our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinnertime.com\/content\/2020\/06\/24\/grilling-tips-and-tricks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">general tips<\/a>\u00a0about cooking on the grill. But if you&#8217;d rather stay inside, that&#8217;s fine! French fries can be cooked in the oven or even\u00a0the old fashioned way \u2014 in a big pot with vegetable oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ff9900;\">How to get started:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Peel<\/span><\/strong> the potatoes. If you prefer to leave the skin on, that&#8217;s fine too!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Cut<\/span><\/strong> the potato in equal sizes\u00a0for even cooking.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Soak<\/strong><\/span> your\u00a0strips in a bowl of ice water to make sure they don&#8217;t stick to one another.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\">\n<h3>Frying potatoes:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Heat the oil for frying \u2014 you\u2019ll need an oil that you can heat to a high\u00a0temperature without changing the flavor. Try using canola or peanut oil for best results.<\/li>\n<li>In a heavy deep 3-quart saucepan or fryer, heat the oil to 365 \u00b0F. Make sure that the pan is no more than half full.<\/li>\n<li>Using paper towels, pat the potatoes thoroughly to dry before putting into the oil.<\/li>\n<li>Fry the potatoes in batches about 5 to 6 minutes, until tender in the center and the edges are crisp and golden brown, turning once.<\/li>\n<li>Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the fries from the hot oil, and transfer to clean paper towels to drain. If you want, you can sprinkle with salt! Keep the cooked fries warm on a baking pan in the oven while frying remaining potatoes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-4\">\n<h3>Baking and grilling fries:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Baking fries and grilling fries have similar instructions, but will vary depending on your recipe.<\/li>\n<li>Coat or season the fries according to recipe instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Preheat the oven or grill between 425 to 450 \u00b0F, depending on your recipe.<\/li>\n<li>Evenly distribute the fries on a pre-oiled or sprayed baking sheet or grill pan.<\/li>\n<li>Flip the fries about halfway through cooking for even crisping.<\/li>\n<li>Remove fries from the oven, and place in a paper towel-lined bowl to serve.
