It was soooo many moons ago that I wouldn’t have found a selection of hummus varieties at the grocery store like I can today. In fact, I don’t recall seeing it at all! Carol made it from scratch and said it was the easiest thing ever!

And that’s when I started making my own hummus. Today you can find all kinds of varieties and sources for hummus at the store. My kids have personal favorites, but just as easily make their own. It only takes about five minutes! We’ve had fun making it together, plus trying different ingredient mixtures over the years like roasted peppers, beets, sweet potatoes etc. Bring out your food processor or mixer and get creative.

Homemade hummus lasts for about 3-5 days but can be frozen for up to 6-8 months. Just make sure to leave some room at the top of your air-tight container because it will expand as it freezes.

My kids often use hummus in other ways than simply as a tasty dip. They smear it on sandwiches, layer on pizza, substitute as salad dressing, top burgers and more. They are very creative in all the ways they add it to their meals!

Here’s what I really love about hummus besides it being tasty; it’s really healthy. Hummus is a great source of plant-based protein and is high in fiber. It’s low glycemic index helps control blood sugar levels and the ingredients like chick peas and olive oil are heart-healthy. Hummus is also a great option for folks who are gluten, dairy and nut free. Tahini, often an ingredient in hummus, is ground sesame seeds. If you are allergic or sensitive to seeds you can just as easily leave this ingredient out. (Be sure to indicate in your Dinnertime Profile any allergies.) Here’s a great nut-free recipe for Garlic Hummus.

If you love hummus you might want to try tzatziki. It’s another Middle Eastern easy-to-make and easy-to-love dish. We often serve both hummus and tzatziki side by side as dips. Lay out a nice platter with pieces of pita bread, carrots, mushroom tops, celery sticks and more and watch everyone dig in! (Don’t dips just make carrot sticks yummier?!)

The high protein in tzatziki helps reduce appetite, regulate hunger hormones and increase metabolism. Tzatziki may taste creamy but is actually low in calories at only 35 calories in two tablespoons.

Homemade tzatziki has a refrigerated shelf life of about two weeks however it never lasts that long in our house! My daughter loves to add tzatziki to warmed up leftover roasted veggies for her lunch. It can be frozen, but only for up to 4 days. Defrost it slowly or the lemon juice will curdle. My advice?
