Make 2023 Your Best Year Ever!

I don’t really like to make resolutions. I think they’re too binding. Plus, they rarely stick and I’m left with a feeling of failure. In fact, 80% of all New Year’s resolutions go out the window by the second week of February.

Instead, I like to look at the beginning of every year as a time for opportunities. This is a good time to assess what makes me happy and what I can do to maintain and improve upon my happiness.  I find the happier I am, the more open I am to new opportunities like developing a new friendship or applying for a promotion at work. I feel more courageous and receive greater rewards. I want to do the things that help me be my best self.

Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions.

~Dalai Lama

Some years my happiness goals relate to improving my relationships, getting healthier or keeping a more organized home. Sometimes my goals are about improving my work opportunities or saving more money. These are all great goals and some years I want to do all of them! Wishing is great but a specific action plan is the key.

What can you do to be happier this year?

Follow these 8 steps to reach your goal:

  1. Own it. What specific area of your life are you interested in improving? Write it down. Post it where you see it every day. Say it out loud.
  2. Identify specific steps necessary to achieve your goal. If you want to save money, how much do you want to save per month? If you want to exercise more, how many days per week do you want to exercise? Write it down.
  3. Scale it. Choose a goal that is achievable and break it down into smaller incremental targets. You can always adjust as you make progress. In fact, studies show smaller achievable goals produce greater results, thus providing continuing motivation.
  4. Plan it. How are you going to achieve your plan? What tools can help you? Be specific:  plan your meals, calendar your exercise, set up auto deduction from your paycheck, etc. Do your research. Once again, write this down.
  5. Line up your support team. Working out with a buddy keeps you on track. Same goes for weight loss.  You can even utilize online resources to workout with your faraway friends.
  6. Love yourself. It’s not about what other people think. All that matters is how you feel about yourself and your achievements. Many people get in their own way by allowing self-doubt. You have a goal, a plan and a team. This is yours!
  7. Reward yourself. When you plan your goals, plan a reward for when you hit a certain achievement. For example, when you hit your monthly exercise goal, treat yourself to a new pair of workout leggings. You will feel energized and motivated to continue.
  8. Share with others. Feeling great about your recent weight loss? Help out a struggling friend by sharing easy and tasty lower calorie recipes. Let DinnerTime help you find more healthy recipes that everyone will love. Better yet, get together virtually to make a few of the dishes. Helping others has long term happiness benefits
